SYNOPSIS
A year ago, high school student Larry killed his best friend, Rand. He found naked pictures Rand took of Larry’s 13-year-old brother, Jim. Larry wants to forgive himself but can’t help wondering… did he punch Rand to protect Jim or did a darker impulse drive his rage?
Now Larry and his alcoholic buddy Pete have been hired by Gilman – a teen “Nazi” – to kill a fellow student and retrieve his notebook, the contents of which may, or may not, implicate Gilman in activities sexual or criminal. Instead of destroying the notebook however, Larry keeps it.
Is what it says true? What is real and unreal?
Is Larry gay, straight or bi?
Does his girlfriend, Jude, love him or is she having an affair with Pete?
Is Jim an innocent victim or did he instigate a forbidden relationship with Rand? What does the answer say about the brothers’ dangerous feelings for each other?
The deeper Larry delves into the notebook’s contents the more his grasp on reality slips. It seems no one can help. Larry’s father is dying of cancer and his mother’s a drunk. His teachers are ineffectual. Even the psychiatrist cannot penetrate Larry’s lies.
Larry understands himself least of all. In fact, the only thing he’s sure of is that he’s going insane…
and that people are going to die.
