Description:
America's first automobile race was on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1895. The race was sponsored by the Chicago Times-Herald and ran a 54-mile course from down-town Chicago to Evanston, Il and back.
There were five entrants; 2 electric cars and 3 gasoline-powered Benz machines imported from Germany. The race started in the early morning in snowy conditions. A little over 10 hours later, Frank Duryea was the first to cross the finish line having survived a journey punctured by numerous breakdowns and repairs. He had averaged 7.3 miles per hour and took home a prize of $2,000 ($49,500 in today's money).
Today, the above race would be characterized as "street racing" however, what they participated in was a road rally. A road rally is a car rally that takes place on public roads. It is a popular sport in the United Kingdom, especially Wales, and has been the core of "grass roots" club-based amateur motorsport. However it has declined in popularity since the 1980s and now TSD (Time Speed Distance) stage rallies are probably generally more popular with amateurs.
I created a motor sport model to destroy the proliferation of the "illegal street racing" (ISR) culture in America. Known as RallySport,
In a road rally, competitors compete over a predetermined course against the clock. There is no direct head-to-head racing and the emphasis is very much on navigation and teamwork rather than out-and-out speed. Organizers of road rallies design the course so that no rules of the road need to be broken in order to compete. Contestants must qualify their driving and navigation skills before competing in an officially sanctioned event.
