A great deal of environmental and regulatory pressure is focused upon diesel engine manufacturers. The new Tier III emissions requirement of 0.14 lbs. NOx / MWh is proving to be a difficult hurdle to overcome for some manufacturers. To exacerbate the problem, local air regulatory authorities in areas of the country not in compliance with Federal Clean Air Standards demand even higher standards to receive siting permits from their local Planning and Zoning agencies. Many diesel manufacturers are resorting to post treatment of exhaust to try to meet the more stringent local standards and in some cases, being unsuccessful.
