There is no single story, really. If you asked about him in New Mexico or parts of Texas, you might hear that he cooked for Herbert Hoover and was consequently made an ambassador to ten countries. If you asked in Mexico, you might hear that he was captured by Pancho Villa’s army and mistaken for an enemy spy. When asked if he would like a last meal, he responded “Only if I may cook it.” He then gave the meal to the general, who, after tasting the food, immediately set the man free.
