Description:
Great Lakes Neurosciences (GLN), is a privately held, C-corporation, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The primary focus of GLN is to develop novel therapeutics for treating neurodegenerative diseases. GLN is actively engaged in developing and commercializing TP5, the first disease modifying therapy for primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with a potential to return of 10-15x on an investment in 2-3 years.
● PPMS is a subset of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients who are characterized by steady worsening of neurologic functioning, without distinct relapses or periods of remission as observed in other subsets. There are currently no FDA approved therapies for PPMS. Without a demonstrated safe alternative, physicians commonly prescribe drugs developed for other forms of MS to PPMS patients, off-label, even though they have not been shown to have an effect on the unique pathology of PPMS.
● ALS is a rapidly progressing neurodegenerative disease whose initial symptoms are muscle weakness and stiffness, which rapidly develop into complete paralysis. There is one FDA approved drug, Rilutek (riluzole)- Sanofi, to treat ALS in the US.
● TP5 is a therapeutic peptide derived and modified from a human protein. It is aimed at correcting specific pathways in the brain that leads to the loss of insulation around nerve-fibers (demyelination) in PPMS and death of astrocytes and motor neurons in ALS. The prospective profile of TP5 will be a disease modifying therapeutic, with extremely low toxicity, and self-administered by patients as an injectable.
As a virtual biotech startup, GLN will capitalize from the expertise of service providers and stakeholders resulting in efficient and timely product development process. With this strategy GLN intends to attract major pharmaceutical companies that may be interested in acquiring GLN as early as phase I clinical trials.
