Description:
The Minor Football League organization was incorporated in 1996. Gaining attention from the local press as a minor league powerhouse, the Chiefs (MFL team) have moved the chains in establishing credibility for minor league football in the Washington Metropolitan area.
Run by former NFL players, (Bobby Wilson, Redskins first round draft choice in 1991 and a member of the Super Bowl Championship team and Richard D. Myles), the Washington Chiefs have tackled major league obstacles head-on with persistence and drive. They have turned the difficulties in running a minor league team without major league monetary backing, into opportunities to demonstrate the wherewithal that took them to the NFL.
The Chiefs recruit many outstanding athletes including former NFL draft picks who are looking to work their way back onto a NFL team. We have collegiate players from Howard University's championship team, Florida State, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, Penn State and many other Division I schools. Two of our players were signed by the XFL.
In fact, it is our successful football program that makes us unique! We have nearly 50 young men who take being role models in their communities very seriously.
• Our players have played in college and university football programs from across the country,
• Our players have established other careers, but want to continue to play football in hopes of being picked up by another professional organization,
• Our players are required to contribute 100 hours of volunteer service to the Washington Chiefs organization each year that they play on the team,
• Our players are paid a small salary, and
• Our players act as mentors to at-risk youth throughout the region.
Many dedicated volunteers including several former Washington Redskins act as the core of our coaching staff and youth mentors.
