I am preparing to open a not-for-profit resource center for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren to service the grandparents in the north, west, and northwest suburbs of Chicago. There are similar centers in the city of Chicago but travel is prohibitive in time and distance. I am putting together a plan for help in legal, housing, counselling, and education. I am already working with local school districts in indentifying families that need help. With over 200,000 children in the state of Illinois being raised by their grandparents, we are past due in offering a resource center where they can find help. Approximately 80% of the grandparents are carrying the financial burder of raising a second family on their own. They need help, both moral and economic.
