Since this concept was announced, it has made headlines across the feature pages in newspapers across the UK (will send you links). A series of legal hurdles needed to be crossed (those being: league cooperation, plus corporate sponsorship on television and player immigration status) - and now this concept is ready for launch for 2012!
For the past decade Fort William has been without doubt, the worst team in the Scottish Highland League. Their reputation has grown across Europe –as they have become known throughout the world of sport as perhaps the very epitome of a “hapless team.”
They might even be the worst team in Europe, and on the verge of collapse -but now an astonishing world’s first is taking place on the picturesque pitch at the foot of Ben Nevis. An eager US media impresario, Paul McDonald, who boasts ancestry in Lochaber, has pledged to take the struggling team “from worst to first” with a ground-breaking new concept in television.
As an intriguing part of the master plan, McDonald will recruit and export the pick of the US amateur and semi-pro players and relocate them in Fort William to bolster the struggling Claggan Park outfit.
The “docu-soap” fly-on-the-wall show footage will follow the arrival and integration of these unpaid American players in minute detail as they attempt to adapt to the Scottish Highlands.
Clashes, conflicts, rivalries, relationships and absolute and absurd reality are promised as the imports are dropped into a new way of life and harsh new climate. How will the locals react to a group of fit, handsome, young American men playing “their game”, invading “their” bars, restaurants, shops and churches? Worse –how will the Americans react to taking part in working and helping the local economy in Lochaber.
The intent of this show is to BREAK BARRIERS and smash stereotypes. The mood of the show will start off tense, funny, absurd. However, as we move forward in the story arc -we will follow the team and community as they learn to overcome barriers –embrace each other –and eventually learn to be a team.
YANKS! is a docu-soap that follows the invasion of a rugged Scottish Highland soccer team by a group of young, hungry American players. The drama unfolds across the picturesque but “intolerant” Scottish town of Fort William, whose soccer team is renowned for decades of laughable ineptitude. The Fort William Football Club is considered the worst team in Europe. But, help is on the way, if they choose to accept it. Because in the UK -nothing is worse than a “yank” messing with their national sport.
The series follows the players and coaches of this perennially last-placed soccer franchise as their small Highland town is taken over by our group of wide-eyed, handsome, young and perhaps ill-prepared American players who believe that they can take this team from "worst to first.”
