NOURISHING THE DESERT PROJECT!
It's like brining color to the desert, or adding leaves to an old tree. Nourishing The Desert Project is about providing growth, living healthy, and bettering lives. This project is about creating change, providing more efficient resources for our youth’s education, fighting obesity, and giving hope to families living in poverty. We're focused on moving in a direction that will assist and help others, because our youth deserve a healthy and fair chance to succeed in life.
There's a pattern that has been going on in the state of New Mexico for the past three years, going on four. New Mexico is ranked 50th state when it comes to Education. We're ranked among the states with the highest dropout rate, and the lowest math/reading test scores.
When it comes to Child Wellness New Mexico is considered the state of obesity, ranked 49th in the country. More then 25.6% of our kindergarten students are overweight/obese, 34.4% or more 3rd grades are overweight/obese, and more then 28.8% of our adults are overweight/obese. We're faced with problems and struggle with serious health effects related to excess weight specifically among our youth.
Obesity has important consequences it is linked to a number of chronic diseases, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, and some cancers.
New Mexico is the 2nd poorest state, with a 22% poverty rate. 31% of children live in poverty and most are homeless.
