I started Our Portland Story to launch a book project by the same name. Our Portland Story 2008/2009 is part coffee-table book, part yearbook, and part insiders travel guide, but is all about Portland by Portlanders. We sought submissions of text and images from Portlanders of all walks of life that together capture many different aspects of the city in this place in time. Stories submitted for consideration include historical reflections of Portland’s past, accounts of a memorable tattoo, observations from a Portland bus ride, and the story of a scooter riding mom wearing pink.
Each chosen contributor to the book receives a full page in the book that will be uniquely designed to reflect their story. The pages are currently being designed collectively by many different Portland designers to help showcase local design and creative talent. I am now entering the design phase and researching publishers, but am finding the traditional publishing route to be too restrictive to the creative nature of this book. The invested capital would be used to hire an editor and cover artist as contractors and cover the cost of printing and marketing. Please review (URL removed) for more information on the project.
