After spending some time working in the oil and gas industry in the Northern Alberta oil sands as a health & safety consultant I noted some severe deficiencies. My frustrations grew over time as I worked in several different HSE departments for various petroleum companies. Why is it that we do such a poor job on collecting very important data whether that is from hazard identification or investigating incidents? Why have we not incorporated technology in our day to day work allowing us to save millions in future? Below I describe what ails my industry and how I would like to solve it.
The problem: Ineffective means of gathering health & safety data by field personnel and health and safety specialists are costing petroleum companies millions of dollars a year.
The solution: Build a safety application that will serve as a cross platform (Windows, iOS, Android and Blackberry smartphones and tablets) gathering app thereby increasing the quality of data in such way that it will be meaning-full to companies thereby driving down cost and potentially saving millions.
The market: Petroleum industry in Alberta, Canada alone has 180,000 workers. Combining that with all workers in just North America thousands turn to millions.
