Description:
To set up a Foley Sound Studio and business in my home. The majority of the money would be invested in equipment to use, remodeling a room as a sound room studio and another room for Foley sound with a sound stage.
First let me explain Foley sound. Every production uses Foley sound either to replace sounds or to enrich existing sounds. Yes, they use real sound when producing a film. No, they don't use real, (meaning authentic) swords, guns, shields, etc. Instead, they use Foley sound so that the prop, such as a sword, sounds real instead of plastic, which it really is. Even the rustle of clothing is Foley, for purposes of enriching the soundtrack of the production. Foley is a very detailed piece of a soundtrack, and without it, many movies would flop. Sound design on a production can make or break the entire project. If an actor is saying his lines, but the traffic is so loud he can't be heard, the actor would go into a sound booth and do a voice-over in post production. A voice-over is used when the actor's lines are lost in the background noises of the normal world. During production, the sound of the actors is the most important sound to be captured. If that is captured well, the background noises probably need tweaking. That being the case, the sound engineer will go back to the shoot location and capture just background noise so it can be added in post production. Foley sound isn't always authentic noises made by actually hitting someone or breaking something. The sound of an egg cracking open when applied as Foley sounds exactly like someone being punched so hard blood spurts out. The sounds of celery breaking in half sounds exactly like a bone being broken. It is up to the Foley artist to be creative and continue to find things that make a production sound realistic. My studio will compile a sound library of things no one else has produced yet or carries in their libraries. The money would be used to set up and establish this business in my home, where I will produce quality sound to be used in post production. I am innovative and creative. I have been doing freelance cinematography for the past two years while putting myself through college. I now work for the college I received my associates in Digital Video for as evening equipment manager for the same department. One benefit of working for the college is 'free college' so I am taking advantage of this and am now studying for my bachelors degree in the same field. With the bachelors degree I am taking many business classes that will help my endeavor once I graduate in Fall of 2012. At that time I would like to open my own business in Foley sound. In the meantime, I can collect sound, building up my sound library to a reputable size before opening.
