We are Kenneth and Angela Claxton and we feel that now is the time for us to continue our farming experience by starting a business of our own. We have located a farm in Henry County, TN that would be ideal for our business venture. It has a total acreage of 372 acres along with a 1950’s brick house.
We would be starting from the ground up as we have been living on the family farm of my husband’s parents, and therefore would need to purchase equipment as well as the property since the current owners plan to take their equipment with them. We are looking into making this a large hay operation, so we will need to purchase seed as well as fertilizer. We plan to purchase as much as possible locally so that the money stays in Henry County. We will plant an alfalfa/orchard grass mix as this is what the current market demands. Attached is an itemization of our startup costs and estimated income.
We estimate that we will produce on average 100,000 number of square bales which we can sell for $180 per ton or $5.50 per bale. This would give us an income of approximately $554,400.
We understand that this is a large amount of money, but we already have a buyer who is willing to purchase everything that we produce, but if necessary, we can sell it locally as well. There is also the potential in the area for future expansion.
