Description:
SFRS will be offering two disposal services: On-site Fluorescent lamp services and Drum remediation services.
Fluorescent lamp Disposal
SFRS realize the seriousness, of improperly disposing of Fluorescent or High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting. Fluorescent and HID lamps (as well as some types of neon lamps) contain mercury and in most cases are considered to be hazardous wastes when disposed. Mercury is a toxic metal that in certain forms can accumulate in living tissue and cause adverse health effects. Although the amount of mercury in each lamp is small, several million lamps are discarded by Florida businesses each year, making these lamps one of the largest sources of mercury in our garbage. We at SFRS would like to provide a service that would help to eliminate this such danger. We want to help prevent the dangers that mercury can contaminate the air, surface water, and ground water. Mercury contamination in Florida is most evident from the Department of Health’s warnings of high mercury levels in fish in a number of our lakes and in the Everglades.
Because of this, these types of spent lamps, excluding those from households, containing any amount of mercury have been banned from solid waste incineration since July 1, 1994, in any quantity. Since most of these types of lamps contain hazardous levels of mercury, they should not be disposed of at solid waste landfills in Florida if more than 10 lamps per month are generated by a business from any one location. Local solid waste departments are the final authority for landfill disposal and may decide to refuse to accept any spent lamps from generators, regardless of the amount of mercury contained in the lamps. Florida businesses and governmental facilities generating spent fluorescent and HID lamps (“Generators”) have two options for managing them: either recycling or landfill disposal.
1) You are encouraged to recycle fluorescent and HID lamps, even those with lower mercury content, by following the Chapter 62-737, Florida Administrative Code regulations outlined in this fact sheet. Hazardous waste lamps destined for recycling and managed in accordance with these regulations are considered to be universal wastes in Florida and do not count toward your facility’s hazardous waste generator status. RECYCLING IS THE RECOMMENDED MANAGEMENT OPTION FOR ALL LAMPS!
2)
(a) Generators of 10 or less spent lamps per month per location may dispose of these lamps with the regular trash going to a permitted, lined solid waste landfill. Low mercury, non-hazardous waste spent lamps may also be disposed of at permitted, lined solid waste landfills in any quantities. However, contact your local solid waste management department for any final guidance or restrictions on the landfill disposal of these lamps.
(b) If more than 10 spent hazardous waste lamps are generated per month, they may be disposed of at a permitted hazardous waste landfill and would count toward your facility’s hazardous waste generator status.
SFRS have returned to the table on several phases to come up with a convenient way to make things easier and safe. This service that we will provide is unlike any of the companies in Florida. We at SFRS believe that we must be willing to change with the times. And basically that’s providing convenience. Our turnkey service will provide a mobile onsite-crushing service which will eliminate transporting lamp and chancing the possibility of mercury poison. Our vehicle will be equipped with state-of-the-art lamp crushers w/filter to remove the mercury. The technician will then transport the bagged crushed glass back to our Recycling Center, where the crushed glass and metal will be further processed and ready to be recycled.
As you can see we have come up with a cheaper and more efficient way to help. Our service is this in a nutshell, on-site mobile crushers coupled with a state-of-art Recycling center. Completing the cycle full circle from beginning to end. SFRS has always believed that for any waste lamp recycling system to be both economically and environmentally efficient, lamps need to be pre-crushed before transportation. This is because vehicles can then carry nearly five times more lamps than if they remain whole (a particularly important factor when lamps need to be transported over long distances). Precrushing also
overcomes the recognized hazards of the fugitive escape of mercury vapors when lamps breaks during transportation.

After going through the SFRS Recycling center the clean glass cullet is not so sharp so can be handled with care.

Our lamp and bulb recycling plant deals with all types of commonly used lamps, in all shapes and sizes, e.g. straight fluorescent, u-tube, HID, sodium, compact fluorescent bulb (CFL)(URL removed) latest SFRS lamp recycling services also means that our system leads the way for other lamp recycling plants, as it will process all compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) and energy saving bulbs without need for sorting.
Current recycling systems usually only deal with specific types of lamps and processing others may require purchasing expensive front end add-ons or separate stand alone systems. Some bulb recycling companies even improvise, by having to manually separate the glass form the bulky plastic fitting, which will otherwise damage the system. This improvisation can put the operator at risk from unnecessary exposure to mercury and broken glass.
Why Recycle Lamps?
While most businesses are aware of the environmental impact of waste gas discharge lamps (mercury and sodium lamps and bulbs), many households do not realize that these lamps contain mercury.
While the mercury in bulbs has reduced considerably over the years we cannot get away from the fact that today's compact fluorescent lamps and bulbs (CFL or energy savers, as they are commonly called) still contain a few milligrams of mercury. Lamps also have a
lifespan of a few years and while today's lamps & bulbs have a lower mercury content than before, there are still many in circulation and disposed of each year which contain much higher levels of mercury.
Recycling of lamps and bulbs is the best solution for the environment for the following reasons:
1. One fluorescent tube contains enough mercury to pollute 30,000 liters of water.
2. Lamp materials are in general 94% glass, 5% metals / plastic and 1% mercury bearing phosphor powder - why throw away these valuable commodities?
3. Landfill space is at a premium throughout Florida and the rest of the world.
Drum Disposal
SFRS fills that drum remediation services is just as important, we also incorporated a on-site service for drums. We also see the need for the proper disposal for this also. SFRS is an onsite service provider that offers full drum remediation services for the proper drum disposal. We do all the work at your facility. That way, you can be certain the work is done properly. You eliminate your drum disposal liability since the work is being done under your company’s watchful eye and supervision all in accordance with 40 CFR §261.7.
Today we live under new standards of environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources. Environmental damage resulting from improper drum disposal of used drums, often including their residues, is no longer tolerated.
Used steel and plastic drums have two environmentally acceptable fates-to be reconditioned or reused as shipping containers, or to be processed for steel scrap recycling. In both cases, all residues of prior contents must be removed , neutralized, and disposed of in compliance with all relevant requirements.
Why SFRS
Because we have the only mobile drum disposal system that can…
Triple Rinse Steel drums and pails in accordance with 40 CFR 261.7 & crush drums for recycling.
Triple Rinse Plastic drums in accordance with 40 CFR 261.7 & ready for recycling.
Triple Rinse with water or solvents
Generate revenues from recycled steel and plastic.
Consolidate removed residues. The cost for residue disposal is greatly reduced!
Remove oil residues from containers
