Description: The Patrick Institute, associated with Patrick Consult Inc. established in 1975, was created by Dr. Edward A. Patrick to communicate research and advances in Pattern Recognition, Artificial Intelligence, Medical Diagnosis and Treatment. Consult® software is designed to be compatible with the human user, including the physician, physician’s assistant, and nurse practitioner. The system has been tested in over 40 hospitals. For the last 30 years we have undertaken to discover those Likelihood Functions for all relevant diseases, and to provide a framework whereby those Likelihood Functions could be stored and updated. This framework has been developed from actual case studies in the emergency room, resulting in an extensive database. Consult® structures medical knowledge to facilitate learning, consultation, diagnosis and treatment. In a traditional sense, it is a Computerized Textbook of Medicine, a concept initially defined by Patrick and Fattu in the 1970s. Core to the structure is that each and every disease (or syndrome) has a category-feature relationship (likelihood function), where the categories are the diseases, and the features are risk factors, disease history, signs, symptoms, tests, along with text and images. Mission Patrick's Consult®'s mission is to provide physicians, other health care workers, and Yes - Lawyers with a structured relational data base of diseases or conditions with their inherent Likelihood functions ("DNA") based on Features and Expert Knowledge. Diseases with their likelihood functions are grouped by a focus called Subsystems with a further focus called groups within those subsystems. When needed, Findings can be input into any Subsystem to obtained a rank-order list of Diseases ranked by practically defined probabilities (Level ll Processing). Then, an Explanation is available for the decisions. Furthermore, the mission is to help its users where they need it best -memory stimulation. Because there is a uniquely structured data base, Consult® can be viewed as a search engine more powerful that any other search engine on the internet or in PC systems. Level ll processing provides groups of diseases or conditions which satisfy Findings which are logical combinations of Features where these combinations have been found useful. The mission is frontier research using Level lll processing to discover new groupings of Categories for Level ll processing and Patrick's Theorem to discover new diseases which consist of two or more diseases active at the same time. Consult® will be available on the internet, PC's, and the newer handheld Mobile PC's. Such versatility is achieved because such operating systems as Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista are available on these computers. As a comparison, the well publicized WebMD provides non structured text only, and the Level l processing alone in Consult® can be expected to overtake WebMD in usefulness on the Web. Because of its structured data base, Consult® is a far superior search engine for the internet than that used in WebMD. Furthermore, Consult® provides the Likelihood functions of Categories (diseases and Complex Diseases), Level ll processing, and Level lll processing not available in WebMD. Dr. Patrick is open to serious discussions with interested individuals who have a background in this area about a partnership to assist with the launch of Consult®, involving; the marketing, web development/design and PR aspects. A business plan and software presentation video are available for review.
