VitalMedix is a new venture started out of the University of Minnesota Venture Center. The company will develop and market an innovative drug/device combination product for sustaining life during and after severe blood loss that will save thousands of lives annually. The product has shown promise in keeping cells, organs and tissues alive for several hours after blood losses exceeding 60% of total volume. However, this is not a blood replacement or a volume replacement technology; it a low volume, site of trauma treatment to sustain life in the face of severe bleeding. The technology provides an energy source to cells in the absence of oxygen normally provided by blood flow. The technology also prevents cell damage caused during the blood loss and during reperfusion.
