Description: Mind-Body Health via Games of Skill: MindPowerPoker, by Janine M Lodato (The following excerpt is from a book by the author published at (URL removed)) Life stands on three legs: mind, body and soul. They should be well balanced, but sometimes one ofthem gets a little less capable. Many times the mind has to make up for the weakness of the body. Insome cases the soul has to lift the mind. This interaction can also work very well between two peoplesuch as wife and (URL removed)choNeuroImmunology (PNI), the scientific term for mind-body interaction, helps by means of themind commanding the body to fight serious illness. Take the case of my husband, for example, who ismy full time caregiver due to my disability. Three years ago he was diagnosed with a strong case, anadvanced case of prostate cancer. But, because of my quadriplegic condition, due to my late stageSPMS (secondary progressive multiple sclerosis), he must do everything for me, even scratch mynose or my eyebrows or whatever itches or whatever other need I may have. It appears that his mindis telling his body not to give in to cancer since he must stay strong to be able to help me. His mindcommands and the body (URL removed) husband simply does not have time to be sick and he does not allow himself to be sick. Actually itis simply a matter of involvement and time. My caregiver, my hero husband finds time to look after allmy needs so he does not allow himself time to feel sorry for himself which clearly helps with his (URL removed) does not have the time and luxury to give up or give in to illness, thus clearly he is a very fineexample of mind body interaction, PNI, doing a great job of keeping him alive and helping with his fightagainst (URL removed) mind is a powerful tool. When the body flakes out, the mind can take over for the body'sshortcomings and fill the disabled person's time with useful and enjoyable tasks. Rather than going toan exercise gym the mind can connect to a brain gym via the Internet. So the Library of Congress andthe Government could provide the Internet as a free service to the disabled. The Government and themedical establishment should put together a data base of care givers and the disabled who need caregivers, so they can match up according to needs and availability. The Internet is a great tool for PNI, especially with cognitive mind-based games of skill, thus helpingthe people in need to improve their physical conditions. There is increasing scientific interest in thearea of brain-immune system interactions and the physiological changes that are induced by activationof the immune system. It is apparent that behavioral and psychological factors can modify the functionof the immune system and health. Susceptibility to viral infections, activation of latent viral infections, and relapses/remissions in patients with HIV positive individuals are influenced by interactionsbetween the brain, endocrine, nervous, and immune systems. Stress and other behavioral andpsychological factors may be linked to disease susceptibility and progression. The best way to controlsomeone's chronic conditions or disabilities is through involvement and the PNI effects such activitybrings (URL removed) of the potential best ways to collaborate and get involved with cognitive activities is via the use ofinteractive games. Not games of chance, they are too stressful and stress is bad for health, but gamesof skill . Most card games like poker is based on to a very large degree on pure chance, and maybesome psychology to bluff and read the other players. But the chance element, what kind of cards youmay be dealt, dominates the game. So we need a pure game of skill in which the chance element istotally eliminated. The problem is that chess is too complicated, checkers is too simple and Sudoku isa little artificial. My above-mentioned book proposes a new game of skill based on the rules and purpose of poker, which is well known throughout the world, but instead of chance the play is performed based on rulesof skill. This is a true story of such care recipient, Janine, a quadriplegic wife, and 24/7 caregiverhusband, Laszlo, the inventor of board-based poker games: (URL removed) should be noted that everybody can use MindPowerPoker in any and all its forms, not just thepeople in need of care and their caregivers. A board version, a Wii version as well as on-line contestversion of the MindPowerPoker game is under final stages of development by us. -- Janine M.
