Description: To improve fuel economy for the trucking industry, requires understanding why fuel, or, battery power is used. The short answer is, moving an 80,000-pound tractor and trailer, using a diesel engine, requires using fuel to develop enough energy, or a battery pack with enough power, to develop motion for the total loading effect of the combination vehicles, traveling over the highway systems. Presently, that level of energy developed from fuel used averages, 6-mpg, for an 80,000-pounds load. Solution to improve fuel economy, is to reduce the loading effect, of the primary load, which is the weight of the trailer and its cargo. This weight equates to 72% of the total load for the combination vehicles. System we are introducing reduces the loading effect of the trailer and its cargo, by 80 to 90%. This level of reduced loading effect will allow the tractor to achieve 12 to 13-mpg. A battery powered tractor will multiply its range of operation, by a factor of 3 to 4 times, using the RDS to reduce the overall loading effect of the combination vehicles. At this level, new high energy batteries, can be recharged during highway operation.
