Vending machines constitute a $50 billion a year industry, with over 10 million vending machines in operation in the U.S. alone. Competition for a share of this growing market is stiff, with much attention being placed recently on quality of service at the point of sale. Rising prices and higher value items now available in vending machines has presented a new challenge from consumers who are hesitant to spend significant dollars where products are still dropped from great heights into a hard plastic tray. While there has been an industry shift to the more expensive robotic machines that dispense these items with greater care, most vending companies cannot justify such an expense.
