Electricity costs Haitians about six-and-a-half times what it costs in the U.S. state of Maine. Random intermittency in Haiti can last days at a time. • While Haiti boasts many new cutting-edge solar projects, like the powered Hôspital Universitaire de Mirebalais, its primary source of electricity is diesel fuel. • However, as only 20% of Haitians have access to the electrical grid, solar power offers an innovative way to bring electricity to this beautiful Caribbean nation that’s poised for an economic comeback. • Only about 20% of the 10 million population are estimated to have access to electricity. • Up to 80% of the people lack access to electricity, leaving as many as 8 million people to burn fuels like wood, charcoal and kerosene for heat and light. • Currently, Haiti gets 60% of its electrical energy from imported diesel fuel, most of which comes from Venezuela. • Capital city Port-au-Prince has the most widespread electric grid in the nation, covering 45% of the city’s population. • In some places in Haiti, people have mobile phones, but no place to charge them in their home, leaving them to use special charging stations that charge far more than home use would cost.
