Lifeguard Surgical Systems has developed the patented (US 9,072,445 B2) Advanced Surgical Visualization (ASV™), an “add-on” device that immediately adds near-infrared (NIR) functionality to existing laparoscopic surgical systems. Use of the ASV can immediately improve patient outcomes by illuminating critical hidden structures during surgery and decreasing the chance of devastating surgical injuries. The first application of the ASV ™ platform is a Bile Duct Vision System that provides the surgeon with a unique real-time image of the hidden bile duct during gallbladder surgery. In Laparoscopic Cholecystectomies (minimally invasive gall bladder removal), more than 6,000 patients per year (out of 1 million) are severely injured due to inadvertent damage to the bile duct. Beyond the devastating impact on the patients, the cost of these medical errors totals over $1.2 Billion annually. . Future applications will address intestinal surgery, gynecological surgery, and many other areas where limited visibility is an impediment to safety and efficiency.
