Description:
Sky Consortium [“Sky”] is a group of Sri Lankan companies having obtained the necessary licenses that is planning to establish a Wireless Broadband Network in Sri Lanka for the provision of data, voice and video services.
Sky plans to rollout a network that is rapidly deployable, relatively low cost, flexible Wireless Broadband Network that provides telecommunications grade availability of service with complete independence over the last mile from other carriers to create a market position as an early mover in the Broadband market, which will grow substantially.
Using the Company’s Wireless Broadband Network, customers can securely and almost instantaneously exchange high volumes of data internally, or with other businesses and organizations or the Internet. High speed and secure data exchange by wireless is an evolving and exciting business opportunity. The Company plans to capitalize on the flexibility and cost effectiveness of its wireless solution to meet the growing demands of small and medium businesses, and community service organizations such as healthcare providers and local government.
In addition to the data and voice services, Sky plans to provide video services in the form of pay television via IPTV. IPTV is becoming a buzzword in the telecommunications industry due to the fact that IP enabled digital technology offers immense opportunities to both operators and viewers. Thanks to the rapid development of digital technology, operators worldwide have been able to introduce a large number of new interactive applications in the television market besides a large number of entertainment programmes over a single delivery platform. The Television Broadcasting License issued to Sky by the Ministry of Mass Media and Information will enable Sky to become a real Triple Play service provider.
