A new approach for Infusion Pumps
In today's economy , the challenge is to lower cost while at the same time increasing patient safety. Infusion-Smart is a software solution that is under final development to provide basic infusion pumps, with many of the advantages of "Smart Pumps", and more, for a small fraction of the cost. For the past 15 years many older infusion pumps, and new ones, have a data port that provides pump status to any computer. Infusion-Smart wirelessly combines Pump Information, with Patient and Drug library information, displaying all on a large monitor at the nurse’s station. It can also be sent to a PDA or pager. A barcode scanner allows for patient, drug, and pump identification. Any error will cause the monitor to flash red and highlight the issue. The huge cost savings is based on the fact that with Infusion-Smart, the drug library, (with guardrails), is not installed in the pumps, just in the computer that monitors the pumps. Furthermore, Infusion-Smart will be sold per in fifteen pump units, as each screen can display full information for only fifteen pumps, therefore a hospital need not commit to a huge investment by wiring the entire hospital as with “Smart Pumps”
