INTREPID is an acronym for Internal Robotic Explosion Proof Inspection Device that performs API 653 inspections of Aboveground Storage Tanks (AST) while they are in-service and full of product. Patents pending at USPTO and the PTC and grew out of a specific request by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to the U.S. Dept. of Energy for robotic Non Destructive Technology (NDT) that surveys tank floor bottoms with Ultrasound Technology (UT) transducer scans without taking the tank out-of-service. The robotic inspection saves time and money, is safer because there is no hazardous entry, and is environmentally friendly. The robot has successfully performed over 30 inspections for major oil and gas companies and other AST owners and is the only known "explosion-proof" robot worldwide that can perform API 653 inspections.
