At a time when computer, appliance and furniture stores are struggling, one sector has been posting steady growth, the rent-to-own (RTO) industry. The $6.3 billion RTO industry serves 3.2 million customers a year, who rent - with an option to buy - furniture, electronics, major appliances, computers, wheels and tires, musical instruments, jewelry and other products. Business is up because of an increase in the number of consumers who are short on cash and credit. But taking a longer view, the recession's bigger impact on the industry has been wider exposure. The economy has made millions of potential customers take a look at rent-to-own.
